Lighting Tips From Sea Gull Lighting!

Sea Gull Lighting is dedicated to the growth of the lighting industry through technical education and fostering better business environments.

Our goal at Sea Gull Lighting is to provide a venue that elevates the level of professionalism within the lighting industry for individuals engaged in the sale, specification, design, merchandising, and installation of residential lighting.

Sea Gull Lighting provides an area with overall illumination. Also known as ambient lighting, general lighting radiates a comfortable level of brightness, enabling one to see and walk about safely. It can be accomplished with chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights, and with lanterns outside your home. A basic form of lighting that replaces sunlight, general lighting is fundamental to a lighting plan.

Sea Gull Lighting helps you perform specific tasks such as reading, sewing, cooking, homework, hobbies, games, or balancing your checkbook. It can be provided by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting, and portable lamps. Sea Gull Lighting’s patented Ambiance® Lighting System also provides task lighting for many areas of the home. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eyestrain.

Sea Gull Lighting
adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of a decorating scheme, it is used to spotlight paintings, houseplants, sculpture, and other prized possessions, or to highlight the texture of a wall, drapery or outdoor landscaping. Accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting around it. This usually is provided by track, recessed, or wall-mounted fixtures. Sea Gull Lighting’s patented Ambiance® Lighting System also provides accent lighting for many areas such as coves, cornices, highlighting art, and more.

Energy Efficiency with Sea Gull Lighting

Due to major improvements over the last few years, fluorescent lamps are now a very viable alternative to incandescent lamps for home lighting use. As an example, for the same amount of electrical energy, compact fluorescent bulbs produce 3-4 times more light than an incandescent bulbs.

Incandescent Options
Sea Gull Lighting Incandescent lamps are the least expensive to buy but the most expensive to operate. Incandescent lamps also have the shortest lives of the common lighting types. They are also relatively inefficient compared with other lighting types.

The three most common types of Sea Gull Lighting incandescent lamps are:

Standard incandescent
Known as the "A-type light bulb," these lamps are the most common yet the most inefficient light source available. The best option to achieve energy-efficiency is to replace "A" lamps with compact fluorescent lamps.

Tungsten Halogen
This newer type of Sea Gull Lighting incandescent lighting achieves better energy efficiency than the standard A-type bulb. These lamps are more expensive than standard incandescents but can have significant impact on achieving greater light output than standard incandescent lamps.

Fluorescent
Sea Gull Lighting Fluorescent lighting is used mainly indoors, both for general/ambient lighting and task lighting, and is about 3 to 4 times as efficient as incandescent lighting. Fluorescent lamps last about 10 times longer than incandescents. To gain the most efficiency, you should install fluorescents in places where they will be on for several hours at a time.

Compact Fluorescent
Sea Gull Lighting Compact fluorescent lamps CFLs) are the most significant lighting advance developed for homes in recent years. They combine the efficiency of fluorescent lighting with the convenience and popularity of incandescent fixtures. CFLs can replace incandescents that are roughly three to four times their wattage, saving up to 75% of the initial lighting energy. Although CFLs cost from 10 to 15 times more than comparable incandescent bulbs, they also last 10 to 15 times as long. This energy savings and superior longevity make compact fluorescent lamps an excellent choice for residential use.

High-Intensity Discharge
Sea Gull Lighting High-intensity discharge (HID) lamps provide the highest effectiveness and longest service life of any lighting type. They are commonly used for outdoor and street lighting, but have very limited applications in homes. Their residential use is limited to outdoor lighting for driveways, backyards, etc.

Energy-Efficiency with Lighting Controls
Sea Gull Lighting controls are devices for turning lights on and off or for dimming them. The most useful controls for increasing lighting energy-efficiency in a home are dimmers, photocells, and occupancy sensors.

§   Dimmers reduce the wattage and output of incandescent and fluorescent lamps and significantly increase the service life of incandescent lamps. Dimming fluorescents requires special dimming ballasts and fixtures, but does not reduce their efficiency.

§   Photocells turn lights on and off in response to natural light levels. Photocells switch outdoor lights on at dusk and off at dawn, for example.

§   Occupancy sensors activate lights when a person is in the area and then turn off the lights after the person has left. They are popular for areas such as closets and recreation rooms.

The Shapes & Forms of Gull Lighting

Once you've selected what you want to light, you'll have to decide how you're going to light it. Your local Gull Lighting distributor, showroom or facility is the best place to view the many different styles, sizes and shapes of lighting fixtures that are available to deliver the general, task, and accent light you need.

Hall/Foyer Fixtures can create a congenial atmosphere, while providing you with the general lighting you need to greet guests and assure safe passage into other areas of your home. Use ceiling, chain-hung, or close-to-ceiling fixtures in hallways, stairwells, and entryways.

Chandeliers can add sparkle and style to your dining room while giving you the general lighting you need for dining and entertaining. They are also used in bedrooms, foyers, or over a living room grouping or a grand piano. Some are designed with downlights to provide task lighting for homework or table games, or to accent table settings. Chandeliers by Gull Lighting are available in both incandescent and compact fluorescent. The addition of a dimmer control lets you alter the intensity of light to suit the mood and activity

Pendants can provide both task and general lighting. Equipped with shades or globes to avoid glare, they are suspended from the ceiling over dinette tables, game tables, kitchen counters, or other work areas. When used over end or night tables, they free up the space occupied by table lamps. Pendants by Gull Lighting are available in halogen and compact fluorescent. The use of a dimmer control gives you the flexibility to vary the light to suit the occasion.

Ceiling Fixtures usually provide general lighting. They are practical in busy areas such as foyers, hallways, bedrooms, kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, playrooms, and dens. They are available with incandescent, fluorescent, and energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (see Light sources).

Wall-Mounted Fixtures can furnish general, task, and accent lighting. Many are designed to match and supplement dining room chandeliers, or to provide hallway, bedroom, or living room lighting. Wall brackets/sconces are often used for task lighting at the bathroom mirror. Gull Lighting is also proud to feature many wall mounted fixtures that meet the government's standard for the Americans With Disablilities Act (ADA). They are available with a choice of incandescent and energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.

Bath/Vanity Lighting Strips supply task lighting, while supplementing the general lighting provided by ceiling fixtures. Similar to the lighting in theater dressing rooms, softly glowing strips of globe-shaped incandescent bulbs provide excellent lighting for applying makeup, shaving, and grooming. Gull Lighting also features energy saving fluorescent lighting options for bathroom areas of the home.

Portable Lamp can deliver general, task, and accent lighting, while giving you the flexibility to move the light whenever you want. Table lamps, console lamps, floor lamps and wall torchiers are available in a variety of styles to complement your decor. Small specialty lamps fill a variety of task and accent light needs. Gull Lighting features lamps that utilize incandescent bulbs, while energy saving fluorescent and/or halogen may be available from your local lighting distributor.

Track Lighting can provide general, task, or accent lighting all at once in one flexible lighting system. You can move, swivel, rotate, and aim the individual fixtures in any direction along the track, giving you the versatility to change your lighting scheme when the need arises. You can also hang small chandeliers and pendants from the track. Gull Lighting Track fixtures are available in standard or low-voltage current, with a choice of halogen, and energy-efficient compact fluorescent light sources
